Salo Flohr: From Chess Fighter to Chess Writer by Jimmy Adams

Salo Flohr (1908–1983) was one of the strongest chess players in the world during the 1930s. In his prime he won more than thirty international tournaments, defeating many of his greatest contemporaries—including three world champions. By the end of the decade, Flohr was even contracted to challenge Alexander Alekhine for the World Championship, a match tragically cancelled by the outbreak of the Second World War.

This book presents a rich portrait of Flohr as both player and thinker. It contains one hundred deeply annotated games, alongside an additional sixty games annotated by Flohr himself and by leading contemporaries.

Flohr was also a gifted journalist. Included here are more than forty of his chess articles, filled with sharp observations and witty, first-hand reminiscences of the great chess personalities he knew throughout his life. The volume is further enriched with photographs, tributes, and biographical material.

A true ‘natural player’, Flohr combined clarity, intuition, and strategic depth. His games are not only beautiful but highly instructive, offering timeless lessons in middlegame strategy and tactics that remain invaluable for today’s competitive players.

Salo Flohr is written, edited and published by Jimmy Adams and distributed by New In Chess.

Jimmy Adams is a prolific chess author, known for his work on classic tournaments, and legendary players—including a monumental 4,000-page series devoted to Paul Keres.
